Office Based Procedures
In our specialty suite, our physicians offer office based ob/gyn procedures, including some that require anesthesia. These procedures are less invasive and have fast recuperation times. In addition, these in office procedures offer a better financial option for most patients.
The MyoSure® procedure takes just 30 minutes for the removal of submucosal fibroids and polyps. This provides the patient with effective relief of heavy bleeding, without any surgical incisions. This one-time treatment is ideal for any woman of any age wishing to keep her uterus intact and functional. There are none of the risks associated with hysterectomy or the potential side effects common with hormones.
Women with heavy or long-lasting periods caused by submucosal fibroids or endometrial polyps may be candidates for the procedure. Please discuss this in greater detail with your provider to see if the procedure is right for you.
NovaSure® Endometrial Ablation is a quick, safe, and simple procedure to lighten or stop your periods, without the side effects of hormones or the risks of hysterectomy. It is a one-time in-office procedure that works by removing the endometrium, or the lining of the uterus (the part that causes the bleeding), with a quick delivery of radiofrequency energy. This procedure is also referred to as a uterine ablation.
Why choose the NovaSure® procedure for your heavy period?
- Safe: No pills. No hormonal side effects.
- Effective: It has been effective for 77.7% of women; menstrual bleeding is dramatically reduced or stopped.
- Quick: NovaSure® endometrial ablation is a one-time, five-minute procedure that can be done in your doctor’s office, usually for the cost of your copay.
Not all women are candidates for NovaSure® Endometrial Ablation Procedure. Your doctor will explain the risks of all treatment options. NovaSure® endometrial ablation is for premenopausal women with heavy periods due to benign causes who are finished childbearing. Pregnancy following NovaSure can be dangerous. NovaSure® uterine ablation is not for those who have or suspect uterine cancer, have an active genital, urinary or pelvic infection or an IUD. NovaSure® is not a sterilization procedure. Rare but serious risks include but are not limited to thermal injury, perforation, and infection. Temporary side effects may include cramping, nausea, vomiting, discharge, and spotting.
A hysteroscopy is a procedure done to look at the lining of your uterus. It is the visualization of the inside of the uterus to diagnose or perform minor surgical procedures.
Reasons for a Hysteroscopy:
- To determine the cause of abnormal bleeding, severe cramping or postmenopausal bleeding
- To see if there is a problem inside the uterus causing infertility, like scar tissue
- To remove growths, such as fibroids or polyps
- To take small sample tissue for analysis (biopsy)
- To find the cause of repeated miscarriages
- To check for endometrial cancer
- To place a permanent sterilization contraceptive, Essure.
The Procedure:
Before the procedure, you will be given medication or anesthesia. During the procedure, a thin viewing tool called a hysteroscope is put into your vagina and gently moved through the cervix into the uterus. The hysteroscope has a light and camera hooked to it, so the endometrium can be seen on a video screen. Compared to more invasive procedures, a hysteroscopy is usually a same-day procedure, with short recovery times, and less medication for pain.
The loop electrosurgical excision procedure, LEEP, is a minor surgical procedure that takes about 30 minutes to complete and it can be done in our office. The procedure uses a thin, low-voltage electrified wire loop or ball to cut out abnormal cervical tissue that is seen during a colposcopy. In addition, the procedure will remove abnormal cervical tissue in the upper cervical canal that cannot be seen during a colposcopy.
During the procedure, the doctor will insert a lubricated tool called a speculum into your vagina. This will gently spread apart the vaginal walls, allowing proper examination of the cervix. Then you will receive an injection with medication to numb the cervix, a cervical block. Then the doctor will proceed with the removal of the abnormal cells.
After having a LEEP procedures, typical symptoms include:
- Mild Cramping happening several hours after the procedure
- Dark Brown Discharge during the first week after procedure
- Vaginal discharge/spotting can happen up to 3 weeks
In most cases, patients are able to return to normal activities in 1-3 days. However, recovery time does vary depending on the procedure. Sexual intercourse should be avoided for 3 weeks after the procedure. Pads should be used instead of tampons for 3 weeks.
Dilation and curettage, also know as D&C, is a procedure to remove tissue from inside the uterus. Doctors perform dilation and curettage to diagnose and treat certain uterine conditions. Dilation is when the opening of the lower part of the uterus is widened. Curettage is when the uterine contents are removed with a curette.
You may need a D&C to clear the uterine lining due to heavy bleeding conditions, to remove cysts or tumors, or after a miscarriage or abortion. The procedure does not involve cuts or stitches, it only cleanses the cervix with an antiseptic solution. However, you may receive some type of anesthesia before or during the D&C procedure.
The Procedure:
During a D&C, you lie on your back and place your legs on stirrups, like during a pelvic exam. The doctor will insert a speculum into the vagina and clamp the cervix in place.
During dilation, the doctor may insert a slender rod, laminaria, in order to gradually open the uterus. In some cases, medication may be given in order to soften the cervix to help it widen.
During curettage, in addition to using the curette tool, the doctor may use a cannula to suction remaining contents of the uterus. This can cause cramping. In many cases, that tissue sample will go to the lab for further examination.
When tissue from the pregnancy remains in the womb after a miscarriage, it can cause heavy bleeding or infection. Electing for a Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) procedure will avoid this. The D&E procedure is a minor surgical procedure which involves dilating the cervix and cleaning out or “evacuating” the uterus. The procedure usually takes about 30 minutes to complete.
When does a Dilation and Evacuation Procedure take place?
- After a missed abortion: the embryo or fetus dies, but no bleeding or cervical opening occurs
- After inevitable abortion: the embryo or fetus dies, and painful or heavy bleeding occurs
After a D&E, a normal recovery may include:
- Irregular bleeding or spotting for the first 2 weeks. During the first week, avoid tampons and use only pads.
- Cramps similar to menstrual cramps, which may last from several hours to a few days, as the uterus shrinks back to non-pregnant size.
- Emotional reactions for 2-3 weeks. It is normal to feel relief, sadness, grief, or guilt. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can make emotions stronger than usual.
My GYN doctor was closing her practice, so I was in the market for a new doctor. I researched some practices from a list that my doctor provided to determine which would be the best fit for me. I chose Mid-Carolina OB/GYN because of the reviews I read online and the location. I received great customer service from the moment I called to make my first appointment through when I arrived for my first visit. I was called in the back within the timeframe of my appointment. It was refreshing that there was not a long wait. The person at the front desk as well as the nurse that tended to me treated me like a valued patient. I just love Dr. Tucker! She took the time to have a discussion with me first and understand my medical history before examining me. She is thorough, personable, seemed to genuinely care about my well-being, and wants to ensure that I have good health. I had a wonderful first visit and look forward to a progressive doctor:patient relationship with Dr. Tucker.
I can not say enough great things about this practice, especially Doctor Inge. He made me so comfortable throughout my entire hysterectomy process and after a mishap on my part, got me in quickly and made sure everything was OK. I would highly recommend using him. After some scary experiences with other doctors, I am even more thankful to have someone I can trust and who makes sure he takes cares of his patients.
It was an excellent experience! Highly recommend this practice even if this was only my first time going.
The whole staff was very friendly, welcoming and all knowledgeable in their areas of expertise. It was also wonderful to have someone share with me expected out of pocket cost for prenatal care based on my specific insurance plan.
I rarely write reviews but this experience deserved one. I saw Lindsey Lewis this morning. I couldn’t have asked for a better Dr. I highly recommend going to her. She calmed my nerves and she made the procedure as painless as she possibly could. The staff was nice and well organized and got all patients through quickly even on a busy Friday.
I love this practice. I always feel welcomed and cared for when I’m there.
My entire experience with Mid-Carolina has been excellent. Dr. Maddison was wonderful. She took her time with me, answered all my questions thoroughly and put me at ease for my exam. Communication from the office staff has been prompt and professional. Highly recommend!
Today’s visit was great! From the front desk to the lab, to the great Amy Gilbert. I followed Amy to Mid Carolina and I have been a patient for over 10 years. She is truly amazing!
Dr. Wind and her colleagues are excellent OBGYNs with incredible skill and a wonderful bedside manner. I strongly recommend this practice.
Dr. Inge is absolutely amazing . I had seen a prior OBGYN ( my first time ever) and she made me feel like I never wanted to have kids & was attempting to take my ovaries out which made me get a 2nd opinion. My first appointment, his spirit put me at ease & felt comfortable. I did have to get surgery & they got me scheduled in 2 weeks !! Even with this being my first , I was nervous but was told I couldn’t get no better than him & I stand by that !! He was able to save some of my right ovary because he wants to make sure that I get my baby in the future, which I really appreciate !! Jennifer , his nurse is amazing too , she was patient when I had any questions and made sure I understood everything. Emily called me the next day to get my surgery scheduled . You will get amazing service here !! Thank you everyone at Mid-Carolina !
