Intrauterine Devices (IUD’s)

An IUD, or intrauterine device, is a small, plastic, flexible, T-shaped device that is placed into a woman’s uterus for birth control. There are two types of intrauterine device’s available in the United States. One is hormonal, and one is not. An Intrauterine device is 98% – 99% effective for birth control.

Hormonal Intrauterine Device

The hormonal IUD releases progestin, which causes the cervical mucus to become thicker so sperm cannot reach the egg. The hormone also changes the lining of the uterus, so implantation of a fertilized egg cannot occur. There are two types of hormonal IUDs available: Mirena & Skyla. Mirena can be used for 5 years, and Skyla can be used for 3 years.

Non-Hormonal IUD

The non-hormonal intrauterine device contains copper. The copper is slowly released into the uterine cavity. It stops the sperm from making it through the vagina and uterus to reach the egg, thus preventing fertilization. There is only one non-hormonal intrauterine device available, ParaGard. It can be kept in place for up to 10 years.

If you are interested in getting a Mirena IUD or other intrauterine device placed, please call our office at (919)781-5510 to schedule a consultation with one of our physicians.

Easy parking. Short wait. Friendly staff. Dr. Syreeta Tucker is a gem. Honestly one of the best places I’ve been to. Any question I ask, I’m heard and given detailed explanations of what I may be experiencing or have experienced. Nice to be heard, seen, and cared for!

The whole staff was very friendly, welcoming and all knowledgeable in their areas of expertise. It was also wonderful to have someone share with me expected out of pocket cost for prenatal care based on my specific insurance plan.

I have been a patient for over 20 years and I appreciate the care and attention that I have continued to receive over the years. It means a lot to know my doctors cares and has nothing but my best interest at heart.
