Breast cancer is the most common concern in U.S. women. More than 230,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected within the next year, and almost 40,000 women will pass away from this disease. The lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is one in six overall and one in eight for invasive disease.
Mammograms are an excellent tool for finding early breast cancer stages, resulting in a decrease in mortality. We recommend starting annual mammograms at age 40, based on screening recommendations from the American Cancer Society, American College of Radiology, American Medical Association, National Cancer Institute, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.
We offer state-of-the-art Hologic Selenia Dimension 3D Mammography. In addition to the standard convenience of having your mammogram on the same day as your annual appointment, our patients can now opt for the latest breast imaging services available on the market.
Digital breast tomosynthesis (tomo), also known as a 3D mammogram, is a revolutionary new screening and diagnostic breast imaging tool to improve the early detection of breast cancer. During the 3D mammogram, an X-ray arm sweeps over the breast, taking multiple images in seconds. Images are displayed as a series of thin slices that our radiologists can view as individual images or in a dynamic, interactive animation. Approved as an imaging modality by the FDA in early 2011, 3D mammography is used in combination with 2D digital mammography.
